Japanese Breakfast

The musical project of Michelle Zauner — Korean-American musician, producer, and author. Zauner began releasing music under the Japanese Breakfast name in 2016 as a way to process grief after losing her mother to cancer. That raw emotional honesty has remained the core of everything she makes. Psychopomp (2016) introduced a hazy, lo-fi dream-pop sound. Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017) pushed into art rock and synth-driven experimentalism. Jubilee (2021) was the breakthrough — a lush, euphoric, orchestral pop album about consciously choosing joy, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. Zauner's memoir Crying in H Mart became a New York Times bestseller. Essential entry point: Jubilee.
