What’s odd about this record is that it really has absolutely zero telling of what Pink Floyd would become later. This isn’t the mature, uber-serious progressive rock that we all know and love, it’s a whimsical psychedelic rock record with really dumb songs about a gnome and a scarecrow and how Syd Barrett has a bike that you can ride if you like. However, in all fairness it’s not just a joke record and it has some absolute classics for the band. Opener Astronomy Domine is just awesome, it builds up like you’re in a rocket flying into space and it has this super trippy vibe. Interstellar Overdrive is also a highlight… just absolute insanity for 10 minutes, weird soloing spooky sound stuff, pretty much what I imagine being on acid is like. Also like Lucifer Sam, because it’s about a cat and cats are awesome. Otherwise, I kinda just have to be in the mood to listen to the pop stuff like Flaming or The Scarecrow which is just a little too far on the whimsical scale. But I like Bike, because it’s absolutely unhinged, half of its this dumb pop song and then it turns into audio horror at the end. Otherwise this is a good record but inconsistent. If you like psychedelic rock this is a must hear, but do NOT start here if you’ve never heard a Pink Floyd record.
