This album…. It’s a miracle I don’t believe exists. Every single song has a direct musical concept and story to tell. The Avett Brothers are just purely creative in their sound and words in a way that the world may never find again. Yes, it’s rock music…. But there’s such beauty to every song. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise may be one of the most inspiring songs in the world. Truly, whenever I listen to the Avett Brothers I have pure song jealousy. I wish I had thought of it and written it first. Every song feels like an understanding of the human condition without denying how grieving it is… but also leaves you with this hope somehow. I love how much their family seems to be important to them and how that’s so quickly and unapologetically portrayed in their music. From cute love songs, to rock anxiety songs, to existential crises…. This album has it all! They clearly just have this musical instinct that makes them clever song writers. The way they end the album by saying, “I haven’t finished a thing since I’ve started my life” as a cliff hanger. Mind blown! Song jealousy!!! I will always aspire to be as good of writers as these guys.
