The original guts literally does not have any bad songs. Not that the deluxe does…. But I just feel like the deluxe songs are a drop off in quality. I am not falling for the propaganda that girl I’ve always been is a really good song. It doesn’t even feel like a complete song to me. The thing about Olivia is that I don’t think she’s necessarily the greatest writer of all time but MAN she sings every line so passionately that it doesn’t even matter. Like how epic of a song is logical… it’s up for debate… but she sings it with such passion that it makes me believe in the moment that it’s the greatest song of all time. Like I just feel whatever emotion she’s trying to make me feel (e.g. the grudge- gut-wrenchingly devastated) to the full extreme. I think she just has this authenticity that’s hard to dislike. Do I think there’s moments where the angst borders on cringe…? Yes. But it’s typically pretty charming and only comes off as minorly petulant. All American Bitch is a song I wish with all my soul I wrote. It’s just the perfect feminist song. And Lacy! And making the bed! And vampire! Etc. etc. etc. I also think this album is probably a step up from sour because I think she broadens the ideas and concepts of the song more! I loveeee an album that talks about more than just boys (and male albums that talk about more than girls- this standard extends to both genders).
