7/10

It’s NOT my genre lowkey BUT I think he has a lot of great things to say that I have to admit I didn’t expect. Am I the type of person to assume most country music isn’t very deep (like about beer and partying in the same way really pop music is often about sex and lust)… yes, absolutely. Was I wrong? I don’t know if I will generally say I’m wrong about country music (like come on I Love My Truck still exists along with Red Solo Cup) HOWEVER I will say I was wrong about Zach Bryan. Of course Pink Skies and 28 are both beautiful songs that I already knew going into the listen but I was also impressed by other songs on the album like The Way Back, Bass Boat, Northern Thunder, and Bathwater. I actually would go as far to say that Zach Bryan is at his worst when collaborating with other artists. There’s five songs including other artists on this album and I like two of them… but the standout bad one is Sandpaper (which I loved the lyrics of however… his and Bruce Springsteen’s vocals do not mix- it reminds me of What’s Wrong With Me by Olivia Rodrigo featuring Robert Smith). Overall though? I was proven incorrect about my assumptions about Zach’s music so maybe that proves that perception isn’t everything?
