4/10

Yeah, this album is about 40/60 for me. I like a few of the songs a lot. I just think overall it's really basic. I think there's fun pop vibes though. I really love Freezing and House On Fire and The Other Side for fun, hot girl vibes. Overall though? I just think it's pretty basic pop music. I think Mimi has good ideas, but it has so many things I don't like about pop music... overused production and some gimmicks that make the songs sound more like they're trying to be clever than trying to say something. I think that can often be the thing that destroys a song. If you're dying out of your mind to be really smart and clever then it almost never works out. Even though I like House On Fire (mostly for the vibes) this song is a great example of that. I also just think that even with 12 tracks... I learn quite little about Mimi and the way she thinks. There is one song where she really gives me what I want as a music listener and that's Amelia (the title track). There she finally tells me something about herself and growing up. I also think Freezing toes that line. Every other song just feels like maybe good break up songs, but something anyone could've written. What we love to see in music is an identifiable song-writing style. I will say though!- her voice is so beautiful and rich. It just feels like she named this album after herself... which made me think it would tell me something about herself. Maybe even an identity thing because the album is her birth-name even though she goes by her nickname. Instead we got an enjoyable album... but nothing with a deep cut.
