4/10

This is an okay album. His vibes (and abs) are immaculate, however, it's not really anything special lyrically speaking. There's some earnest yearning songs in here, but nothing of literary depth. I really like the vibes of Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else and Young American Heart specifically. I think Benson is also a great performer. He's no Shakespeare and I think he's not very risky in his storytelling and lyrics... but that's okay. Not everyone is meant to be Taylor Swift I guess haha. I think this song is really fun and I have to admit some understanding to as why Mystical Magical was such a hit, because despite being a very bizarre song that dances around the meaning... it's gimmicky and catchy in a way that basically made it destined for tik tok fame. it doesn't make me cringe in the same way a lot of songs like that do too. Like it almost feels so ironic that that's the point... but maybe I'm giving Benson Boone too much credit? Overall, I get it? I don't really connect with it deeply, but I get it. And he at least has a few interesting things to say layered in with songs like Momma's Song. But honestly? Vibes are what saves this album to me.
