Alligator Bites Never Heal

Doechii
2024Hip-Hop/Rap1 review

Alligator Bites Never Heal is a critically acclaimed 2024 mixtape by Tampa-born rapper Doechii, released through Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records [Alligator Bites Never Heal, Doechii - Qobuz](https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/alligator-bites-never-heal-doechii/qgppbx2m6a24b). The project explores themes of industry politics, self-worth, and her Florida roots across 19 versatile tracks [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_Bites_Never_Heal). Fun fact: The mixtape was preceded by a series of weekly social media releases called 'Swamp Sessions', where Doechii wrote and recorded short songs in hour-long periods [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_Bites_Never_Heal).

Decided to revisit this one two years later, and I have some thoughts. The first thing that immediately stands out is that Doechii is capable of so much, and obviously this mixtape is crafted to show that. This feels like a true mixtape in the way that it's intention is just to be a demo of what Doechii can do. The tape itself doesn't sound super full, most tracks barely having over a single verse, and almost every track being under three minutes. This still just makes me curious about what she's going to do in the future rather than me just enjoying what I'm currently listening to. There are some genuinely brilliant moments on this tape, like the song BOOM BAP for example. Not my favorite song to listen to necessarily, but it perfectly shows Doechii's ability to completely subvert expectations. She's hard to put in a box of any kind, and I think this could eventually lead to her getting success like Tyler. She's someone that I really don't know what to expect from the sound of her debut album, and I hope she doesn't play it too safe. I think Doechii is awesome, and I have so much faith that whenever her debut album finally comes out, it's going to be great. I'm glad that I'm happy that TDE didn't decide to rush it out during her massive high last year, but also if it isn't great at this point, we might have another Chance The Rapper situation on our hands. I really enjoy listening to this one, and I'm a huge fan of Doechii, but again, that debut album better be good. After the intense amounts of hate she's received, I don't know if her career can take a mid album. As a fan too, I will be heartbroken if it isn't at least great.
