Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is the twelfth studio album and first soundtrack by Bob Dylan, released in 1973 for the Sam Peckinpah film of the same name. The primarily instrumental album is widely renowned for featuring the original version of Dylan's legendary hit "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". Fun fact: Director Sam Peckinpah was so moved by Dylan playing the song "Billy" for him that he offered Dylan an acting role in the film as a character named "Alias" on the spot!
