2017Alternative R&B, Neo Soul10 reviews

One of the defining R&B records of the decade. Intimate, raw, and sonically sophisticated, Ctrl announced SZA as one of the most important voices in contemporary music and set a new standard for what modern R&B could feel like. The album lives in the uncomfortable emotional territory of being young, insecure, and desperate to be seen. Love Galore became an immediate summer anthem. Drew Barrymore is a slow-burn masterpiece of vulnerability. The Weekend is frank and unapologetic. 20 Something closes the record with aching, unresolved yearning that hit an entire generation right in the chest. Appeared on virtually every year-end best-of list in 2017 and decade-end lists in 2020. A modern classic.
