Definitely Maybe

Oasis

The fastest-selling debut album in UK history at the time. Loud, swaggering, and completely convinced of its own greatness from the very first note — Definitely Maybe arrived like a declaration of war against indie diffidence and grunge nihilism. Rock 'n' Roll Star is one of the great album openers: three chords, a massive riff, and Liam Gallagher's voice sounding like he was born to front the biggest band in the world. Live Forever is an anthemic rejoinder to Kurt Cobain's bleakness. Cigarettes & Alcohol channels T. Rex sleaze into something entirely Mancunian. Slide Away closes it with aching, open-sky romanticism. Noel Gallagher's songwriting was fully formed from the start. This is where it all began.
