Discovery

1979Pop rock, progressive pop, disco2 reviews

Released on June 1, 1979, 'Discovery' marked a significant shift for Electric Light Orchestra, embracing disco influences while retaining their orchestral rock essence. The album produced five hit singles, including 'Shine a Little Love' and 'Don't Bring Me Down,' the latter becoming their highest-charting U.S. single at number 4. Notably, it was the first ELO album without their resident string trio, focusing instead on a streamlined quartet. Fun fact: Actor Brad Garrett, known for 'Everybody Loves Raymond,' appeared on the back cover as a palace guard.

The only track on this that I sometimes skip is Diary of Harace Wimp which feels like Lynne's attempt at writing Maxwell's Silver Hammer without any of the wit.
