Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by Prince and the Revolution, serving as the soundtrack to the 1984 semi-autobiographical film of the same name [Purple Rain | album by Prince | Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Purple-Rain-album-by-Prince). The record consolidated his funk and R&B roots while boldly moving into pop, rock, and heavy metal, ultimately becoming his signature commercial and artistic triumph [Purple Rain (album)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Rain_(album)). Fun fact: Prince reportedly took the title "Purple Rain" from the lyrics of the song "Ventura Highway" by the band America [Purple Rain (album)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Rain_(album)).
