The College Dropout

2004Chipmunk Soul29 reviews

One of the most important rap albums ever recorded. At a time when hip-hop was dominated by hard-edged street narratives, West arrived with soul samples, self-deprecating wit, and confessional lyrics from a perspective nobody in rap had claimed before. It changed what the genre was allowed to sound like. Through the Wire was recorded with his jaw wired shut after a near-fatal car accident. Jesus Walks tackled religion with a directness that shocked radio. All Falls Down is a sharp, moving examination of materialism and insecurity. The deeper cuts — Family Business, Last Call — make it feel like a complete world. One of the most influential debut albums in hip-hop. Sounds just as vital today as it did on release.

One of the best records I’ve ever heard, even by Kanye. Mix of soulful beats hip-hop beats and emotional rap beats blend together for a really blissful listening experience. Some high points are Never let me down, Jesus walks, And Family Buisness. Highly enjoyed, 8/10

Incredible debut project. Good production and amazing sound and performances. You can really hear the foundation of Kanye’s sound and production on here and see how it progressed throughout his career. Up there as one of his best ever albums.
