The Importance of Being Idle

2005Rock3 reviews

'The Importance of Being Idle' is the second single from Oasis' sixth studio album, 'Don't Believe the Truth'. Released on August 22, 2005, it debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, marking the band's first consecutive number ones in the same year. Written and sung by Noel Gallagher, the song draws inspiration from The Kinks and The La's, reflecting Gallagher's own experiences with idleness. The music video, directed by Dawn Shadforth, features actor Rhys Ifans in a stylized homage to early 1960s British cinema. Amazeballs

As much as I fucking love this tune and think it's one of their best 2000s efforts, I have a lot of love and appreciation for "Pass Me Down the Wine" and "The Quiet Ones". They're undeniably simplistic, but it weirdly works in their favour, resonating with me in similar ways to "The Importance of Being Idle". Taking back what I said about "The Hindu Times", this is probably their strongest single release post-90s.
